College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering (CCME) of Peking University was originally founded as the Chemistry Division of the Metropolitan University of the Qing Dynasty in 1910, which is the oldest chemistry department in China. CCME was selected by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to be one of the“National Pools for Talents in Basic Scientific Research and Education”in 1993. CCME still is the top 1 in China Discipline Ranking in the years 2004, 2009, and 2012.
CCME has four majors for undergraduate students: chemistry, material chemistry, applied chemistry, and biological chemistry. Life-long studying ability and critical thinking is the main aim for undergraduate training. Considering both the core training of chemistry (basic knowledge, basic skills, and comprehensive qualities) and the individuality of students (talents, interests, etc.), a diverse training system is developed.
Many famous professors, such as Ying Fu, Qiyi Xing, Guangxian Xu etc., devoted to undergraduate training of our college. Their textbooks have great influence in chemical education of China. At present, CCME has a team of teachers including 21 Chang Jiang Scholars and 38 winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, who have both strong research capabilities and teaching experience. CCME has 4 Excellent Courses of Science Talent Training Base, 3 Beijing City Fine Courses, 2 National Excellent Courses, 1 National Classic Textbook, and 8 Excellent Textbook of Beijing. The experimental chemistry center of Peking University is one of the first National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, which offers chemistry laboratory training for undergraduates. CCME encourages students to participate into scientific research and innovation activities, and about 80% undergraduates directly involve in cutting-edge research work. After graduation, about 90% students continue further study in famous universities and research institutions at home or abroad.
